Two basic routes:

- New protocols
  + No compatibility constraints; freedom to get it right
  - More work, takes longer
  - Slower adoption

- Leverage existing systems
  + Part of the job is already done
  + Fast deployment; clients already exist
  - Limited by existing architecture
